Kevin Robertson: Paintings 1984-2022

On 10 September 2022 Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at The University of Western Australia will open a major mid-career survey exhibition of Western Australian artist and Art Collective WA member Kevin Robertson. Curated by Dr Sally Quin, the exhibition highlights the development of Robertson’s painting since graduating from Curtin University in 1984 to more recent work developed for the exhibition.

“Preparing for this exhibition has been an incredible experience and I am extremely fortunate to be given the chance to reflect on this expedition through time, from art school till now” said Robertson. “I am also lucky that through painting I found a meaningful way to process my experience, to think about the culture I am immersed in and to dream about the future. This exhibition is about this experience, the emotional responses that drove the paintings and ideas that informed my way of working inside and outside of Perth.” [Extract, Media Release]

Kevin Robertson is an active Art Collective WA member as an artist and on the board. He is also a Sessional Academic in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry at Curtin University.

In 2021 he curated 'Mimesis', a group show of figurative painting at Art Collective WA, and has held several solo exhibitions also at the Collective. (See some links below.)

He was born in Norseman, Western Australia, in 1964 and studied painting at the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University), graduating with a BA in 1984. He was awarded a Master of Arts from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 1992 and a Doctorate from Curtin University in 2018. He has a consistent practice as a painter and previously exhibited extensively at Galerie Düsseldorf, Perth, and participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Kevin Robertson's painting is represented in many public and private collections including Artbank, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House Canberra, Wesfarmers, Bankwest, The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Kerry Stokes Collection, Janet Holmes à Court Collection.

The exhibition 'Kevin Robertson: Paintings 1984-2022' will be officially opened by Megan Salmon, fashion designer, long-standing friend and colleague.
